Welcome.

The Gospel Choir 'Joyful Spirit' was founded in 2000. During a gospel seminar a number of singers ,male and female, got to know eachother and decided to start up their own choir. From a very primitive beginning - five singers , one living-room and a few gospel songs - the choir has expanded to over 40 members and moved into a school hall. Maria Hermanns, a qualified Opera singer with years of experience, is responsible for everything concerning the choirs repertoire. At the same time she helps each individual to improve and expand their own vocal horizons e.g. through her knowledge of various breathing techniques. Her visit to the U.S.A. in 2005 , where she heard many black gospel choirs , inspired her immensely and has had a definite influence on the choir.

Generally one does not find so-called “Gospel Classics” e.g. “Oh Happy Day “ in the choirs repertoire. You will find traditional gospel or African songs with modern arrangements and dynamic interpretations. The choir does not want to imitate Afro-american gospel singers but is in search of an individual interpretation of the songs. The most important thing being that the enjoyment they have whilst singing should be shared and felt by their audiences.
